Bitcoin critics and those protesting the policies of Salvadoran President Nayiba Bukele have destroyed a cryptocurrency bit machine in the country’s capital.

News site Teleprensa and others posted videos on social media showing a burning Chivo kiosk in San Salvador surrounded by a crowd of journalists and protesters. It is one of many machines that the Salvadoran government has put up in the country in the wake of the adoption of cryptocurrency as legal

tender. Yesterday, demonstrators placed anti – bitcoin slogans on the burnt machine, including the inscription: “democracy is not for sale”.

San Salvador Mayor Mario Durán said

city workers withdrew from the area after receiving threats, possibly from protesters. The damage appears to be limited to the Chivo machine in Plaza Gerardo Barrios in the center of the capital, although protesters also reportedly burned furniture from one of the shops in the plaza.

The Chivo kiosk – similar to a Bitcoin ATM – is one of about 200 in El Salvador. President Bukele said he hopes crypto ATMs will eventually be “everywhere” in the country, though he said no one will be forced to use Bitcoin.

Even before the law legalizing BTC in El Salvador went into effect, the government encountered resistance to the seemingly radical legislation. Protesters calling themselves the Popular Resistance and Rebellion Bloc marched through the streets of the capital back in July. A group consisting of pensioners, veterans, pensioners and other workers held its own demonstration the following month.
