He makes a big mistake and loses a fortune in one click

Millions of dollars inadvertently stolen – Malicious hackers, who are after cryptocurrencies, have a wide range of techniques to steal them. The founder of an NFT

game learned this to his detriment after falling for a phishing attack.

A few minutes of inattention to lose everything

On Saturday, July 31, the Internet user known on Twitter under the pseudonym Stazie announced that

he had lost 16 NFT CryptoPunks as well as “a few ETH” after falling into the trap of a phishing attack.

As a reminder, a phishing attack consists in contacting the user of a service, pretending to be the teams of this one. The objective is to redirect the victim to an exact copy of a known site, in order to get his passwords or, worse, his private keys.

According to the information he relayed on Twitter, Stazie was quietly at home when a Discord bot contacted him about a contest to win 10 CryptoPunks on the occasion of the project’s fourth anniversary.

Without thinking, Stazie clicked on the link and ended up on what he thought was the official website of LarvaLabs, the entity behind CryptoPunks. However, the domain name ended in “.to” instead of the “.com” of the official site.

Once on the site, a fake Metamask pop-up warned her that her security had been compromised and asked her to fill in her seed phrase

to recover her account, which Stazie made the mistake of doing. That’s all it took for the attacker to gain access to Stazie’s wallet and start siphoning it.

“It all went down like a bad dream. I almost felt like I was hypnotized. There was no critical thinking, and that’s beyond silly. The punks and ETH quickly disappeared before I could do anything. “

A bitter loss for the user

Before he even realized his mistake, 16 CryptoPunks present on his wallet had vanished and with them, some ethers. According to LarvaLabs, 10 CryptoPunks are still held by the crook.

At the same time, the latter rushed to resell 5 CryptoPunks for a total sum of 149 ETH, or about $387,000 at the current price.

While the situation is “extremely painful and embarrassing,” Stazie decided to speak out on Twitter so that other internet users don’t get fooled by the same ploy.

CryptoPunks craze exploited by hacker

In late June, CryptoPunks had celebrated its 4th birthday.
