And one more win for cryptos – PSV Eindhoven will be one of the first major European football clubs to receive its entire sponsorship in bitcoin (BTC). The club continues to dribble in the cryptocurrency space after experimenting with NFTs.
On August 17, Dutch soccer club PSV Eindhoven announced in a statement a partnership with Anycoin Direct, the Netherlands-based cryptocurrency trading platform. The collaboration will make PSV Eindhoven the first major European club to have all of its sponsorship paid for in BTC.
PSV’s commercial director, Frans Janssen, created the Bitcoin wallets needed to make the partnership a reality. He stressed the fit between the club’s logic of continuous innovation and the innovative nature of cryptocurrencies:
“The possibilities and future offered by the world of cryptocurrencies are very promising. As a club in the heart of the Brainport area, we are always innovating, with cryptocurrencies fitting well into that picture.”
Anycoin Direct COO (Chief Operating Officer) Lennert Vlemmings expressed optimism about the collaboration, which aims to bring a little more awareness to cryptocurrencies and Anycoin in Europe:
“Having grown up in the region, PSV has always been very close to me. As a technology company in the Brainport area, we are very excited to be working with the PSV. Paying in bitcoin marks the next step in the adoption of cryptocurrencies in the European Union.”
Anycoin was founded in 2013 by a group of friends. It is now a major exchange in the Netherlands, offering 28 cryptocurrencies for buying and selling.
Unforgettable matches in the memory of NFT
This is not PSV’s first experience with cryptocurrencies and blockchain. Back in April, the club auctioned off an NFT related to the 1988 European Cup final they won against Benfica. The NFT was accompanied by an official certificate signed by Hans van Breukelen, the goalkeeper of the winning team.
PSV are not the only football club to have tokenised a historic league match. Lega Serie A, the Italian football league, in partnership with Crypto.com, has also decided toimmortalize the Coppa Italia final between Juventus and Atalanta on May 19, 2021, via NFTs containing the highlights of the match and the image of the trophy.

Is this the beginning of a fruitful long-term collaboration?
